Royal St Georges

Royal St George’s has a long and proud history and has hosted many major
tournaments, in addition to The Open Championship, for both amateur and professional golfers. These include the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, British Amateur, English Amateur, PGA Championship, Home Internationals and the Brabazon Trophy.
Arnold Palmer famously won the PGA in 1975, reaching the 14th with two prodigious blows with his driver on a stormy day when no other competitor got closer than 40 yards
from the green in two.
Open champions at St George’s have included Henry Cotton, Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Greg Norman and, of course, Sandy Lyle, who won in 1985.
Dr Laidlaw Purves, of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, designed and established the club in 1887. It was intended to serve the needs of London golfers who were only able to play their golf on often crowded and unkept courses in the area. Named St George’s, it was to become the southern England rival of Scotland’s St Andrews. Royal status was bestowed on the club by the King in May 1902.
The links provides a severe test for even the greatest of golfers and the fact that only three Open champions, Bill Rogers in 1981, Greg Norman in 1993 and Ben Curtis in 2003, have managed to finish under par after the 72 holes, tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the test offered by this fine course. It demands concentration for all 18 holes.
The club professional is Andrew Brooks, a member of the Walker Cup side in 1969, who played for several years on the European Tour. His son Michael was a member of the 1997 Walker Cup team.
