Carton House

Colin Montgomerie’s success around the world has been based around his accuracy,
both from the tee and with an iron in his hand. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the course he designed at Carton House should reward those characteristics.
The first-time player can’t help but be struck by the size of the greens — they are huge. This means, of course, that you need to think long and hard about club selection because you don’t want to be left with a series of 40-yard putts.
Although it was only opened in 2003, readers of Golf Punk magazine voted it the best course of 2006. It is cut through rolling meadows and punctuated by native fescue, with
fast-running fairways, quick greens and head-high pot bunkers, demanding a strategic approach. There is no way you will get away with a hit-and-hope approach here.
Monty set out to create an inland links-style course and has succeeded spectacularly. From the back tees, the Montgomerie measures 7,300 yards and has already hosted the Irish Open.
Carton House is also home to the O’Meara Course, designed by the former Masters and Open champion Mark O’Meara. By contrast, it is a traditional parkland layout.
From the moment you arrive at the Carton House estate, you will immediately understand exactly why the 19th Earl of Kildare chose this spectacular location for the Fitzgerald family’s country seat. Built in 1739 and designed by the famed architect Richard Castles, the magnificent Carton House forms a stunning backdrop to this most beautiful country estate. How apt then, that Montgomerie, the only man ever to win the European order of merit on eight occasions, should have been asked to create his masterpiece here.
